From In The Pipeline:
This doesn’t mean that each patient benefits a little but rather that 82 will receive no prognostic benefit. The fact that no other cholesterol lowering drug has shown a benefit in terms of mortality supports the hypothesis that the benefits of statins are independent of their effects on cholesterol.
Derek’s comment hits at the heart of quick, media friendly health recommendations:
You’d think that there would be nothing more well worked-out than the role of different kinds of diets in heart disease, but the closer you look, the messier the situation is.
MailMate is a very nerdy email client for the Mac that has some interesting features and long list of planned changes. The developer is looking to crowd fund future development so he can go full time:
As described in a recent blog post I can no longer afford to work on MailMate full time. Instead of silently slowing down development of MailMate I’ve decided to take the opportunity to do a little experiment.
My absolute favorite add-on for Apple’s Mail.app, MailHub, is on sale right now. I’ve reviewed it already and outlined how it fits into my email workflow. Now go get it.
This series makes me tear-up every time I look at it. It also makes me realize how much time we waste with the ones we love.
By way of Twitter but I forget where. Sorry. I had something in my eye at the time.
WebFaction just rolled out their easy installers for Node.js and the new simple blogging platform Ghost.
Ghost looks great and hosting it yourself sounds even better.
Like I said, WebFaction does have one-click installers, but it’s just the stuff you want.
While I do prefer native apps on iOS, this new mobile app from FastMail is the next best thing.
We’ve also worked hard to make the new interface feel perfectly natural as a finger driven mobile interface. We’ve placed tap targets near where fingers are likely to be and added swipe actions to allow quick archiving or deleting of emails. Simple transitions make it clear where you are in the interface at any time making it easy to navigate.
I’m so incredibly mad at myself for not noticing these things when I was 12. Come on. It’s always about the little details.
Jeff Hunsberger describes his method for creating short-term location based tasks.
I didn’t want to set up geofences for my main “Home” and “Work” contexts because I had dozens, maybe hundreds, of tasks nested under those contexts that would have popped up when I arrived.
The location fences are clever in OmniFocus. Like Jeff, I rarely use them because they are inappropriate most of the time. If I walk past a hardware store on my way to a post office1 I don’t want to be nagged.
Mental Floss has the scoop of the decade. They managed to get an interview with the notoriously private Bill Watterson.
Well, coming at a new work requires a certain amount of patience and energy, and there’s always the risk of disappointment. You can’t really blame people for preferring more of what they already know and like. The trade-off, of course, is that predictability is boring. Repetition is the death of magic.
The Pythonista forums have suffered from spammers since almost the first day it went online. No more! There are new forums that sport the same elegant stylings of Editorial.
