Bigfoot Notes Link

Chris Suave made a wonderful footnote pop-over for Web sites. It’s called Bigfoot. Not only are the footnote previews gorgeous and functional, but they work on mobile devices too. The documentation isn’t too shabby either. That’s some high quality work.

Merlin Mann on The Great Discontent Link

The header image for this interview is one of my favorite of all time. I stared at it and looked at every detail for about 10 minutes.1 Summary: Great interview by Tina Essmaker Thoughtful and lengthy answers by Merlin Plenty of photos throughout Fantastic design. DO NOT READ THIS IN INSTAPAPER. I’m not a fan of “heroes” but Merlin seems to have his shit together in the ways I like:

The CalDigit Thunderbolt T2 Drive Link

The T2 by CalDigit looks like a great Thunderbolt drive. It supports 2 disks as well as SSDs. It’s called a “native” Mac drive which means no special drivers and it’s bootable. As is popular now, you can sign up for a spot on their waiting list. No price given. As for Thunderbolt, the speed is nice but it feels like another Apple boondoggle similar to Firewire. February will mark 3 years since it was released and we still have waiting lists for basic Thunderbolt drives.

Chuck Norris is a Color Link

I don’t know what is more fascinating, the fact that Chuck Norris is a valid HTML color or the explanation as to why it is.

The Dark Mail Alliance Link

The Dark Mail Alliance is partly founded by the previous owner of Lavabit. To bring the world a unique end-to-end encrypted protocol and architecture that is the ‘next-generation’ of private and secure email. What we call ‘Email 3.0.’ is an urgent replacement for today’s decades old email protocols (‘1.0’) and mail that is encrypted but still relies on vulnerable protocols leaking metadata (‘2.0’). They probably want to at least host their VCS outside of the US.

Disney Removes Titles from Your iTunes Account Link

From MacRumors: According to the customer who noticed the missing titles, Disney elected to remove the content from the iTunes Store, preventing customers who have purchased the movies/TV shows from re-downloading the content via iTunes in the Cloud, which allows users access to previously purchased content. I’m just going to leave this link here with the comment that NoteBurner still works on Mavericks. By way of Michael Tsai

Python API for Dropbox Datastore Link

The Dropbox Datastore now has a Python SDK with examples. The announcement was written by Guido van Rossum himself. Very cool. Think about the possibilities of syncing data between instances of scripts across devices. Let’s hope Pythonista and Editorial both add this SDK. Note: I realize the title should say “SDK” instead of “API” but I don’t want to double post just to be pedantic.

Plex Cloud Sync Link

The Plex team has been killing it with the latest updates. The new Cloud Sync announcement: With Cloud Sync, you can now sync your media to cloud storage providers such as DropBox and Google Drive. Your media is optimized for streaming and uploaded, along with the rich metadata you know and love. It’s like having a media server that’s always on and has great streaming speeds! It sounds a bit like iTunes in the cloud but with all of your media acquired from any source.

Running a Small Business Link

The latest episode of Mac Power Users is good. The title is “Running a Mac Small Business with Ben Carter” but it’s really about doing stuff because when it comes down to it, we all work for ourselves on some level.

Apple Mail and Mavericks Link

Apple Mail in Mavericks is having a bit of difficulty with Gmail1 but as the team from FastMail notes, that’s not the only problem with Mail.app. Yes you read that right. It’s copying all the email from the Junk Folder back into the Junk Folder again!. This is legal IMAP, so our server proceeds to create a new copy of each message in the folder. I’ve definitely noticed that Mail has become a resource hog.
