TextTool App for iOS

TextTool is a nice little utility app for iOS. It exists to transform text and has a lot to like. For example, want to quickly wrap some text in comment markup, there’s a button for that: Dig a little deeper and there are powerful text processing options like Regular Expression Find and Replace: While you can enter text directly into TextTool, I see myself relying on the URL scheme to process text sent from other apps like Drafts or Editorial.

PCalc on The Sweet Setup Link

The dear Doctor teaches the kids how to pick a real calculator app: It can’t be just a four-function calculator. Have some pride. I almost feel like Dr. Drang threw a bone to the nerd brigade by including Soulver. It’s clever, but it just doesn’t come close to PCalc. As a side note: you should probably subscribe to and religiously read any site that is smart enough to have Dr.

URL Scheme Security Link

Greg Pierce, the developer behind Drafts and the man behind the X-Callback URL specification: As a creator and advocate of x-callback-URL, security implications have been something I’ve thought about and tried to draw attention to in talks I’ve done on the topic. In the zeal to encourage adoption I may not have done a good job of reminding other developers to keep security in mind planning their URL schemes.

Wallaby Link

You guys are funny. Walla.by probably would have received more attention if it made you pre-order or wait in a virtual line.

The Email Field Guide Link

David Sparks, geek author extraordanaire, does it again. His new book, simply titled Email is terrific. I’ve read/watched/listened from virtual cover to virtual cover twice. I found new and interesting things both times. He hits every significant aspect of dealing with Email on a Mac and iOS. It’s also one of the best iBooks editions I’ve seen of any book.1 Even if you’ve been using email everyday for the past 20 years, like me, you’re going to find something new in David’s book.

Pinner 2 for iOS

Pinner is an iOS app for Pinboard.in junkies like me. I gave it a look when it first came out but the performance wasn’t good enough to keep up with the number of bookmarks I have in Pinboard. I’m happy to say that Pinner 2.0 is great. The caching and browsing is fast. I really like the addition of favicons to the bookmarks. It’s a nice little attention grabber when I’m browsing through my list looking for something to read.

Terminology by Agile Tortoise Sponsor

Terminology for iOS is sponsoring Macdrifter this week. I couldn’t be more excited to have one of my favorite apps sponsor the site. It’s easy to think Terminology is just the best quick-entry dictionary tool for iOS. While it is an excellent dictionary app, Terminology is really a multi-tool for word nerds. Sponsored This article is about a sponsor's product. This is not ad-copy, it's my opinion about something I think is terrific.

iPad Air

I’ve only had the Air for a few hours. My immediate impression is that it feels tiny. At first glance it looks like an iPad Mini. After waffling between the Mini and the Air, I’m glad I chose the Air. It feels like a Mini but works like a full size iPad. I’m curious what the Mini will feel like. This iPad Air feels like the perfect version of the iPad.

Plex Cloud Sync Link

The Plex team has been killing it with the latest updates. The new Cloud Sync announcement: With Cloud Sync, you can now sync your media to cloud storage providers such as DropBox and Google Drive. Your media is optimized for streaming and uploaded, along with the rich metadata you know and love. It’s like having a media server that’s always on and has great streaming speeds! It sounds a bit like iTunes in the cloud but with all of your media acquired from any source.

Running a Small Business Link

The latest episode of Mac Power Users is good. The title is “Running a Mac Small Business with Ben Carter” but it’s really about doing stuff because when it comes down to it, we all work for ourselves on some level.
