My Next Mac

The iMac Pro is not for me. While I love the new dark look, I simply don’t need that kind of power or the accompanying price point. It’s a very reasonable price for what the iMac Pro delivers so I’m not moaning about the price points. It seems very fair but here’s the price rundown for an entry level iMac Pro and and a comparable iMac 5K1: iMac Pro iMac 5K 3.

Safari Tab Search on the Mac

Here’s a little Safari trick that is just gold. Hit Shift-⌘-\ to enter the Safari “Show all tabs” mode. From there it’s just a simple ⌘-F to search the open tabs. Notice that the search also covers tabs open on other devices too?

Apple's Mac Commitment

Phil Schiller earlier this year: “We’re committed to Mac, we’ve got great talent on the Mac, both hardware and software, we’ve got great products planned for the future, and as far as our horizon line can see, Mac is a core component of the things Apple delivers, including to our pro customers.” Apple today: We are working on a software update to address this issue," an Apple spokesperson told iMore.

Image Export from the Photos App

There’s a very easy way to export screen shots from the macOS Photos app and resize them as smaller JPEGs along the way. I’ll let this screen shot of the export screen speak for itself.

The Mac Still Feels Like Home

When my 10.5" iPad Pro arrived I decided to do a little experiment. You see, I honestly believe that the iPad, iPhone, and other micro super-computers are the future of computing and I want to force myself out of old-man complacency. Five months ago I committed to that experiment and avoided using my Mac unless there was absolutely no way to do something on my iPad or iPhone. Last week I ended my experiment and I have a few opinions (big surprise).

1Blocker Settings for Rune Scripts

If you’re not using 1Blocker, I can highly recommend it. I use it on iOS and my Mac. While it only works with Safari, it’s a pretty good shield against website poo. The latest update adds defense against bitcoin mining scripts. I use it for more than just filtering hot garbage ads. Here’s a simple 1Blocker rule to get rid of Secret Rune scripts. That’s used by websites that like to intercept text selection so they can monetize every movement you make, like BoingBoing.

Managing Check Lists

Requirements and User Stories This is the part where it gets personal. The way I use checklists is probably different than some users but that’s how it usually goes. The app must have List templates for things I do over and over, like packing for a trip. Duplicating an existing list works fine. There must be a URL scheme on iOS so I can link a calendar or reminder to a list.

Apple's Continuity Page Link

Old but new to me, this Apple support page is a nice overview of all the continuity services on iOS and Mac. This includes Handoff, Universal Clipboard, Instant Hotspot, Auot Unlock, Calls and SMS notifications.

Outline to Omnigraffle Link

This trick with Omnioutliner is great. Convert an Omnioutliner document into a mind map by importing it into Omnigraffle. There are other ways to do this, such as converting it to OPML and importing it into one of the many top notch mind mapping apps. But Omnigraffle has super powers that most mind map apps lack, like better image editing and arbitrary canvas text.

Text Transform with Alfred Link

I love these examples of text transforms with Alfred. I’m still mostly using Keyboard Maestro because I prefer the options it has but if you want just one application to use as a launcher and utility tool, Alfred is a good option.
