Glassboard The Anti-Facebook

I don’t use Facebook. I’ve been the subject of ridicule and disappointment for several years because I don’t use Facebook. I’ve resisted the pleas of grandparents and friends because I don’t want to post private information about my family on a service I don’t think has earned my trust. Now I have a solution. Glassboard is the social sharing site for people that hate Facebook. The primary goal of Glassboard is to keep information private unless explicitly shared with invited friends.

Backing Up a Hosted Pelican Site

There are two different ways I maintain complete local backups of this site. One uses a web application integrated with Dropbox and SFTP and the other uses Transmit on my Mac. Being a static Pelican blog, a backup means that I just grab copies of the files, so it is fairly easy to automate and schedule. Backup Box I’ve written about Backup Box before. It’s similar to IFTTT but is focused specifically on moving large numbers of files around the Internet.

The Mac Scanner Interface

The Fujitsu ScanSnap is a marvel of engineering.1 I use mine every day. There are a few things that I can’t send through a ScanSnap though. Documents found on the floor of a car, covered in glitter, or just not flat and smooth enough to go through the ScanSnap rollers all require more care. Using a scanner on the Mac has never been easier than in Lion and Mountain Lion.

Macscripz Link

Macscripz is an interesting idea. It’s single clearing house for scripts. It’s attractive and I like the simple layout. I especially appreciate the “Undo” column. What I really want is for the code to also be viewable in a Github like format. I’m always very hesitant to download scripts from people I don’t know. Macsripz does promise some moderation though. Every script on Scripz.com is pre-screened, so don’t ever worry about harming your system with any of our tweaks, we only upload quality content.

Use Any Search Engine in Safari 6 with AnySearch

I like the new OmniBar in Safari but I don’t like the limited options for search. Matt Swain’s plugin gives me back my DuckDuckGo search with Safari 6. Previously I used LaunchBar for all of my web searching. The plugin also makes the search results URL appear in the address bar. Nice addition to Safari. That’s something that required hacks until now. How is this free? By way of OSXHints

FoldingText

I'm a text nerd and I am very excited for the possibility of FoldingText. The version 0.9.1 is out now

Just Build In Virtualization Already

At least once a month there is a new application bundle for the Mac that includes Parallels or VMWare at a steeply discounted price. It's so common that I now consider the standard price of both to be around $50 and includes 9 other Mac apps. Every time I have helped a Windows user migrate to Mac I have recommended Parallels. It eases the pain and gives them a sense of having a safety net even if they never use it.

1Password on the Mac App Store

Roustem Karimov of AgileBits tweeted that the latest 1Password update was rejected for sandboxing entitlements. The direct purchase version was set as end of life about nine months ago. I recall the massive forum discussion about the decision to take 1Password MAS only. I converted to the MAS version in March to get on-board with their product roadmap. Now I see that it is available again as a direct download purchase and @roustem confirms it will receive the next update soon.

Dictionary Macro

As pointed out in the comments to this post about using Sublime Text to write, it’s annoying that it will not use the OS X spell checker and dictionary built into other text editors. For example, here’s the dictionary lookup in NVAlt: Sublime Text 2? Not so much: Here’s a quick and dirty Keyboard Maestro macro that gets around the gap and provides a universal dictionary macro in any app.

The Macworld K760 Review Link

Excellent review from Dan Frakes about the Logitech Solar Keyboard. I've used the K750 on my Windows machine for almost a year. It replaced a Das Keyboard and I have been very happy with it. This new one looks perfect. I won't lament the lack of the Logitech Control Center like Dan does. I've got Keyboard Maestro and LCC is an abomination. One of the only controls that ever killed a Mac when I upgraded the OS (Snow Leopard if I recall correctly).
