Synology Community Packages Link

Use at your own risk, but these are pretty nice third party packages for Synology NAS. Many of them do not work with the latest DSM 5.1 beta but some do and they are great. I’m a huge dummy with an expensive hobby. Same as it ever was.

Data Encoding with L.E.D. Light Link

This Fujitsu technology looks like common sense in hindsight. During a demonstration at a press conference in Tokyo on Monday, a Fujitsu staffer pointed a smartphone camera at a small mannequin and a traditional Japanese woodblock print illuminated with LEDs. A special app on the smartphone, which processes the image data and extracts the ID, instantly showed product info about the mannequin and the history of the print. It’s probably only possible now with the much faster cameras and video recording in cell phones.

A Chemistry Keyboard for iOS Link

Ok, this is kind of cool. It’s a custom keyboard for chemical formulas that makes a lot of sense. I like the quick slide down for subscript. You don’t need to slide all the way over to the sub- or superscript key, just slide up or down to select. $3 in the App Store. I bought it just to be able to paste proper molecular formulas in emails. The Wikipedia search is cute but not terribly useful.

Delight is in the Details Sponsor

My thanks to Shawn Blanc for making Delight is in the Details and for sponsoring Macdrifter. It’s a terrific experience and you can get a crazy 25% discount this week. Bridging the gap between good work and great work is easier said than done. There is no checklist that includes all the details which need sweating over — we figure it out as we go, and it’s on a project-by-project basis.

RefMe Link

RefMe looks really convenient for students. Scan book barcodes to create bibliographic references. There are more sophisticated tools out there to create bibliographies and I’m always suspicious of free tools with no apparent business model, but hey, seems good for people on a budget at school.

Swift REPL Link

Swift has a REPL. If feels pretty slow but it does work.

New FastMail iOS App Link

It looks like FastMail wrapped their terrific web app as an iOS app but added push notifications. The notifications are almost instant when a message arrives (from my one day of testing). It doesn’t appear to support multiple accounts or really add anything other than push notifications. I actually really like their web app so this is fine by me. I also don’t use mail alerts, so have no real need for this app.

Learning to Love Google Drive Link

There’s an interesting new eBook out for Google Drive. Pretty cheap and may very well save money if it saves a Dropbox monthly fee. I use Google Drive only occasionally and the way they’ve broken up the iOS apps is crazy-making. I definitely need this book.

Maudite and Ratings Link

On this week’s Nerds on Draft podcast, Jeff and I talk much less about TapCellar while we drink Maudite from Unibroue. We mostly talk about the variety in rating systems and how we are programmed to think about scores. We also admit how hard it is to rate apps and write product reviews on Amazon.
