Recreating Studio Ghibli in Minecraft Link

Remember when people were talking about whether video games were art? I think that conversation is long over. This is some stunning work. Here’s just one example where the world of Princess Mononoke is recreated in Minecraft:

Curio 10 Released

The hardest part of reviewing Curio for Mac is explaining what it is. It’s like a light-box for information. Or maybe it’s a bulletin board of data. Or maybe it’s a mind mapping application that’s also a rich content organizer. None of these convey exactly what Curio can do. And now version 10 is out and it adds even more, which makes a direct comparison to another tool even more impossible.

Inside the Plot to Kill J.F.K. Link

From David Talbot at Salon: To Morales, Kennedy was “that no good son of a bitch motherfucker” who was responsible for the deaths of the men he had trained for the Bay of Pigs mission. “We took care of that son of a bitch, didn’t we?” Morales told his attorney, Robert Walton, in 1973, after an evening of drinking loosened the CIA hit man’s tongue. It was one more confession that the media ignored, even after it was reported by one of their own, Gaeton Fonzi, a Philadelphia investigative journalist who, after going to work for the House Select Committee on Assassinations, unearthed some of the most important information related to the Kennedy case.

Procreate and Apple Pencil from David Lanham Link

I just love seeing this stuff. Here’s one of my favorite artists showing that the tools don’t make the artist. It’s impressive what someone with talent can do. I expect to see a lot more cool stuff created with the Apple Pencil and iPad Pro.

Giving the iOS 9 Keyboard Switcher Another Try

The alternative keyboards in iOS 8 seemed like a nice idea but switching was painfully slow. That little globe icon was like a nuclear bomb to my productivity and it was far too easy to hit accidentally. But the performance of keyboard switching in iOS 9 is greatly improved.1 I like Uniconsole because it gives me access to Emoticons which I think are much more expressive when texting stupid crap to my wife.

True Terror

True terror is to wake up one morning and discover that your high school class is running the country. — Kurt Vonnegut1 Happy birthday to one of the best people our species has ever managed to squirt out. Go read Slaughterhouse Five or Cat’s Cradle or Bluebeard or just read a bit about someone that knew a few things about humans.2 Probably. I’ve never found a reliable source for the quote.

Anti Ad-Blocking Hacked at Economist

From the Economist: PageFair, was hacked. If you visited economist.com at any time between Oct. 31, 23:52 GMT and 01:15 GMT, Nov. 1, using Windows OS and you do not have trusted anti-virus software installed; it is possible that malware, disguised as an Adobe update, was downloaded onto your PC. What’s PageFair? Oh, just the latest countermeasure to ad-blocking software. Good show Economist. Looking forward to your next article on internet snooping.

iOS App Updates For October 2015

ZoomNotes isn’t the most beautiful sketching app but it sure is the most functional. It’s also one of the most updated, with regular fixes and new features delivered just about every month. The best feature is the zoomed sketching which makes it really easy to add detail to a large sketch without much effort. The design still leaves a lot to be desired but it’s functional where other apps are fluff.

Copied for Clipboard Syncing

Copied is a new clipboard capture and syncing system for iOS and Mac. It’s quite well designed and there’s some extremely thoughtful features. The iOS version has a nice Today widget and 3D Touch actions and can also automatically capture the clipboard while the app is active.1 The iOS version is free to try but costs a buck to enable the iCloud syncing. You read that right. Syncing is through iCloud which is working well for this small amount of data.

Plex App Available for The New Apple Tv

Time to put on a coat if you’re headed to hades because there’s now an officially sanctioned Plex app for the Apple TV. And it looks good. Mine arrives in a day or two. Even if the Plex experience is equivalent to the Roku, I will be pleasantly surprised. If the rumored Amazon video app comes out this week, I’ll gladly eat my words and kick back with season 2 of Gortimer Gibbons.
