Honest Phishing Link

I received this phishing email (it was in my spam folder). At least they were honest with their link naming scheme. “irritate.html”

Dropbox Photo Sync

It’s still beta, but the Dropbox camera sync is very convenient. Whenever I physically connect my iPhone, all of the new photos and videos are downloaded into Dropbox. While it’s not wireless syncing it is a big step forward. Get the forum build 1.3.6 to enable the feature.

Developers, A Love Story

While browsing my Application folder on my Mac, I noticed something. I have a fondness for some apps that I rarely use. I’m just glad that I own them. I may not use them all but I feel good about the money I’ve spent. If I like a developer I buy their wares just to support their work. When I say “I like a developer” I don’t just mean I like their products.

Star Wars Radio Dramas

Hey fellow Star Wars nerds. The radio dramas are pretty great. I just finished the New Hope radio drama and enjoyed it. Sure it’s cheesy, but if you have any fondness for the Star Wars saga, this has excellent supplemental details.

Post From Pinboard to Instapaper

Sometimes I love the Internet. I started researching a new cron job to automatically scan Pinboard for articles tagged with “Instapaper” and make a copy in my Instapaper account. Guess what? It already exists on Ifttt.

New Apple News!

Experiment: Every time a site mentioned a theoretical Apple product due out soon, I deleted them from my RSS feeds. Results: I deleted about 10 feeds before I realized this was going to get ugly. Conclusion: Theoretical Apple news is a popular topic for lazy writers.  Sorry about the sensational title. I feel dirty.

Markdown to Wordpress in Python

I got part way down the rabbit hole before I found this nice looking Python project. It looks very complete. The GitHub project is worth a look too. The python allows writing in Markdown with meta-data headers and then posting directly to a WordPress blog. I might still continue with my work since I like using Marked to get the HTML for a post. Marked provides a beautiful preview of the post as a sanity check.

Footnote Styles

While I like the technical fortitude of Dr.Drang’s footnote solution, I’m not a fan of the superscripted footnote. I’ve always preferred a citation reference as a parenthetical reference and I like the same style for footnotes. I’ve gradually started to include footnotes as bracketed numerical references in my posts here.[1] I come from the small segment of society known as chemists[2]. I learned my writing methodology from the ACS Style Guide and as a chemist, superscripts and subscripts have various meanings that I prefer to keep separate from my writing.

Moving On

Another day, another hosting outage. I suppose it's time to move to a new host and Squarespace (affiliate link for 5by5) is looking really good right now. It's a bit more expensive, but I have no desire to learn to troubleshoot Wordpress or manage a MySQL database. I have other things I'd rather tinker with and this site is meant to be fun for me, not a chore. I figure I'll lose:
