NVAlt 2.2 Beta Link

Of course, I was going to post about the NVAlt 2.2 Beta. As I said on the Twitters, this free application is the brains of a huge amount of what I do. It is the glue that holds my cardboard fort together. At the risk of alienating Zachary, Brett and Elastic Threads, I have one request. Please make this a paid product. Please charge for it to ensure its continued growth and support.

Exporting Fever Saved Links

I use Fever for RSS. One reason I switched is that I want to own my data. Fever is by far the best RSS experience I have had in a web application but it still lacks one big feature: Export of saved bookmarks. No fear, since Fever runs on my own server, I have access to the database behind the service. With some very basic SQL, I have access to all of the saved links, along with the feed content in html format.

Mac Friendly

The Loop links to a job listing site that now includes employer support for Macs. This is just the tip of the iceberg in my opinion. I know of several companies in the Biotech sector that never considered deploying Apple products that are now currently supporting iPads and iPhones and planning on supporting Macs in the future. While designers in the corporate communications offices were vocal about wanting Macs, no one else really cared.

DayOne and Time Travel

Brett Terpstra has posted a number of very cool things that can be done with the OS X and iOS application DayOne. They were so compelling that I gave in and bought the suite. They are all solid and attractive applications but it doesn’t fit my workflow as well as plain text files. Logging If I am actively working on a problem, I record notes in Simplenote (big surprise). On Windows, I either use ResophNotes or the Simplenote Web site.

The iMessage Clipboard

This might seem obvious or dumb, depending on your sensibilities, but the new Messages app makes a decent universal clipboard. Copy a link, photo or text and paste into iMessage on Mac, iPhone or iPad.1 Send a message to myself. Boom. Yeah, it's a little kludgy and ugly but it works. Since when is a clipboard pretty? Sending a file from the Mac version works too. On iOS I get an option to "

Thumbtack App

Don Southard (aka DirtDon.com and MacStories writer) has released a very nice Pinboard menu bar app for the Mac called Thumbtack. Just Pinboard.in, just $1.99, just what I need. Simple and effective.

Plain Text to OmniFocus

This is an oldie and a goodie. Rob Trew makes some damn fine AppleScripts for getting tasks in and out of OmniFocus as well as some great DEVONthink tools. For all my grief for AppleScript, his work is an excellent model of the power of scripting on the Mac. I also love the structure of his scripts. Unlike mine, he properly designs his scripts with methods and descriptive structure. This is how you write an AppleScript:

Some Moom Tips

This is not a review. I've been relying on Moom for many months and these are examples of how I use it. If you're not using Moom then you probably spend a lot of time moving and tweaking windows on your Mac. Stop it. Just go get Moom and play along. Snap Shots One of my favorite uses of Moom is to create work environments and save them as Moom Snap Shots.

Devonthink Pro on Sale Link

MacUpdate has a 50% off sale for DEVONthink Pro. Note, this is not the Pro Office version. It's on sale for another day at $40.00 which is a good price.

Prowl Why I'm Probably Sticking with Growl for OS X Notifications

Apple has announced plans to release an iOS-like notification system for OS X. It looks nice, but I'm likely to stick with Growl. Growl is a highly customizable notification system available through the MAS. Growl has evolved into a mature notification system on OS X, providing many third party plugins and extensions. Given the lack of third-party hooks into the iOS notification system, I have little hope that Apple will open the OS X notification system for customizations.
