How I Buy Apps

Right or wrong, I use the AppStore ratings when I buy an app. There are some developers, that I don't need to see their ratings, I'll just buy their apps. But that is a vanishingly small percentage of developers on the AppStore. For the rest, ratings matter. When I'm shopping for an app, there are several things that contribute to my buying decisions. You get what you pay for I would rather pay for an app than to adopt a free app that gets abandoned.

MindMeister Free for Five Days

MindMeister is having a sale for the next five days. The iPad app is free for five days and a MindMeister account is 25% off their normal pricing. A MindMeister account is required to use the app. I still greatly prefer iThoughts HD but MindMeister provides web access to mind maps which is very convenient.

Keyboard Maestro 5.1 Released

Looks like a good update and some changes to get ready for Mountain Lion. Get it at Stairways Changes for 5.1 <li>Added For Each action allowing looping over a variety of collections.</li> <li>Added Developer ID Signing for Mountain Lion Gatekeeper.</li> <li>Added Percent Encode for URL filter (Clipboard &amp; Variable).</li> <li>Added text token processing to button names in Prompt For User Input.</li> <li>Added text token processing to Open URL and Search &amp; Replace actions.

The Racoon Process

One thing I like about running Little Snitch is that I learn more than I ever really wanted to know about all of the little OS processes that run in the background. Last night Little Snitch asked if I should let a process called "Racoon" connect to a remote address. It's not a good idea to deny the Racoon if you want to use any kind of VPN.1 Also, here's a very good site that lists all known Mac processes.

Auto Pairing with Keyboard Maestro Link

I really like Kaushik's use of a timer in the macro to provide different functionality based on the rate of entry. I might riff on some of these tricks for new macros. Although I do think BBEdit already has some nice features to accomplish complex text wrapping, I have Keyboard Maestro macros for application that are not as feature rich as BBEdit. By way of Clark's Tech Blog.

Auto Resize Images in Acorn

The downside to the new iPad retina display is that screen captures are huge. Rather than continue to fuss with manually resizing and changing the image resolution, I've created a macro to do it for me. The AppleScript uses Acorn to do the file resizing (which is what I use manually). Acorn is highly scriptable and perfect for automation. I'm a big fan. tell application "Finder" set these_items to the selection set myFolder to (POSIX path of (target of the front window as alias)) end tell repeat with i from 1 to the count of these_items set this_item to (item i of these_items) as alias tell application "

FTP Files to WordPress by Email

Yes, another hack to make this site easier for me to manage. I post a lot from Simplenote now. While this is very efficient for making link-posts, it makes it rather challenging to create a post with images. Images are stored on the Macdrifter host in the standard WordPress content directories but I need a URL to create the image link reference in Simplenote. I have used GoodReader in the past to upload an image to the server, but I have to manually create the URL for the image.

Ignorance, Laziness and Python

Clark raises a concern over the death of AppScript. I have to say, I’ve never bothered with it so it will not dramatically impact me. I try not to use too many external Python modules. That’s not because I’m a super-engineer. It’s because I’m ignorant, lazy and selfish. I’m ignorant to many of the modules that are available. PyPi is a good resource but the documentation is often lacking (that’s being generous).

Instacast On My Mac

I love Instacast for iOS. I no longer sync podcasts with iTunes. It’s a waste of time and disk space. If you are unaware, Instacast is podcast player that also downloads and syncs over iCloud between iOS devices. It’s the Podcast player Apple should have made. Unfortunately there is no Mac version. When I want to listen to (or even watch) a podcast on my Mac, I still use Instacast though.
