Bentobox.io aggregates links to different training and tutorial resources for aspiring developers. It’s nicely organized but lacks search. Very nice idea.
This is kind of crazy. You can install an offline, read-only version of StackExchange. The whole thing.
Great tip at TUAW.
You can also test the performance of other Netflix-capable devices using this same tool, but the neat thing about the Apple TV version is that rather than simply showing the different video-quality levels as it does on the iPad, iPhone or web browser, it displays the actual bandwidth you’re using.
Erik and I dug into scanning from a Mac and iOS on the latest episode of Technical Difficulties.
The first rule of Gabe’s desk is that nothing goes on Gabe’s desk.
Damn straight.
A Pinswift bookmarklet (previous review) grabs the current browser page and sends it to the app. Nice.
Exedore is a new Python IDE for Mac. It’s basic but native. It’s also made by the developer of Fluid and Fake, which I also like. It’s $10 and not in the Mac App Store. What’s not to like?
My initial impression: a nice addition to CodeRunner. Worth $10 for the break point support.
Here’s a nice review of the Monoprice 19" tablet monitor. It’s a Cintiq but $389. Monoprice is really picking up steam with their branded hardware. I wouldn’t be surprised if Amazon acquired them. They’d make a great team.
Cumulatively, I’ve listened to Tom Merritt’s voice longer than any other show host. I’ve followed him as he moved from CNET to Twit. While many of the other Twit shows lost my interest, I consistently enjoyed Tom’s smart opinions and reasoned approach to tech reporting. He’s now been fired from Twit, which means that I’m now following him to FrogPants.
Luckily, I’m also a fan of Scott Johnson and I think this is a great next step.
Once a month our podcast Technical Difficulties will be doing an interview-like episode. Why not tackle the hardest problem most people tackle in their life on the first interview? Last week Merlin Mann joined us to discuss changing careers, either by accident or on purpose.
This is still a topic that fascinates me and I’m in awe of people like Merlin that successfully transition into multiple careers over and over. Also, check out the show notes.
I really like Keyboard Maestro but the interface to macros is in dire need of updating. It’s just too cumbersome to load palettes and then find the specific macro to execute. There’s also too much keyboard shortcut dependency for my old brain.
Thankfully Alfred can now trigger Keyboard Maestro macros by name. This is a major leap forward.
NOTE: Sadly, the workflow still chokes on Mavericks.
By way of Jeff Hunsberger.
