Satellites Saved My Marriage…A Review

I bought my first dashboard GPS unit in 2006. My wife had been against the idea for the prior year. Every time I suggested buying one she suggested that we were smart enough to use a map. But then one Saturday we went on a road trip to Ikea that nearly ended at divorce court. We managed to take the right exit, but on the wrong highway. Because it was an industrial park on a Saturday morning, there were few options for getting local directions.

More iPad Note Apps We Might Have a Winner

There’s been a couple of new note apps 1 since my real-world review. Most of them still can not compete with Simplenote and Omnioutlner. However, I have found three very good alternatives. Notely, WriteRoom and Notability. All three of these apps started out simple enough but they have evolved and matured into top of class text editors. Notely; $1.99 Notely started out as a relatively barebones text editors. It had some rudimentary Dropbox syncing that required a manual sync.

Instacast Backups

If you are like me, then Instacast is constantly running on your iPhone. I no longer download any podcasts for syncing to iOS or AppleTV. I have Instacast on iOS and the AppleTV 2 has streaming of "favorite" podcasts. However, now I need to remember to regularly backup my podcast subscriptions from Instacast. If I lost my iPhone it would take quite some time to remember what the names of all my favorite shows are.

Killing Print

If you want to see an industry willingly and eagerly destroy it’s self New York Post website now blocking Safari access on Apple’s iPad Try it from an iPad and see for yourself. That’s not the only publication that I’ve stumbled on. Macworld has been doing this ever since their iOS app was released. There’s a difference between embracing a new technology and tying it around your ankles and jumping in a lake.

Apple Asked for HTML5

The Financial Times recently introduced their new HTML5 web-app as an alternative to releasing a native app for iOS. Now the Zuckernaut is purportedly building an HTML5 web app for Facebook. There’s been a bit of FUD floating around that this is somehow a stick in the eye to Apple. This is exactly what Apple has always wanted. Steve said 4 years ago that there are two development platforms for iOS.

3 Reasons To Develop For iOS Link

Marco Arment summarises the primary reasons to develop for a platform: Developers themselves use and love the platform’s products. The platform has a large installed base. Developers can make decent money on the platform. I think I only care about #1, but then again I have a day job.

Podcast With Dan Bricklin

Remember when I mentioned Dan Bricklin? Well, here's your chance to learn more. There's a great episode of the Triangulation podcast with Dan. He talks all about his iPad app NoteTaker HD, which I thought was very good, if not the most intuitive app. It's worth a listen.

The Future FIle System Has Arrived

iThoughts HD for the iPad was just updated with some minor bug fixes and one big feature (from my perspective). iThoughts now allows a mind map to be sent instantly to another app that supports OPML Guess what new iPad app also supports OPML? Yes, OmniOutliner.  I can now shuttle easily from a mind map to an outline without ever knowing anything about where or how the file is stored.

A Few Alternative iPad Calendars

Listen: I have become stuck in time. Unseen forces have conspired against me to spend an inordinate amount of time watching clocks and calendars. My work is now measured by hours. Yes, billable time is now part of my workflow. Now that I am required to capture my work load by measures of time I need some new methodology. At my job, we are required to input our “timesheet” into Microsoft Project (Enterprise Ultra Premium Edition with nuts).

Free SMS Don039t Kid Yourself

Apple's announcement of new SMS connectivity in iOS5 was pretty surprising. They have essentially told the carriers that they are no longer needed for chat. This has already been a feature of Android if you used Google Chat but I'm sure this will be the future of all smart phones. But if you think the carriers are going to lose money, think again. Their revenue stream will just move over to your network data.
