It’s Time to Retire the Technology Addiction Article [Link]

From ByGoneBureau.com:

“It would probably be worth examining the underlying question here, which is why people like me continue to click through to these stories. But rather than do that, I’d prefer to sidestep that issue completely and instead appeal directly to the writers themselves.”

This trope is shallow and meaningless. It’s a sign that a writer has given up on being interesting.

DNSChanger Infects Fortune 500 and Federal Agencies [Link]

Half of all Fortune 500 companies and federal agencies are infected with DNSChanger malware according to a Verge article.

I sure feel more secure that so much money is spent on busting straight-A students for a gram of pot rather than on protecting federal infrastructure.

Explaining List Comprehensions [Link]

A great explanation of list comprehensions at DZone. I’ve used them several times and the linked Python.org explanation was what I used to understand them. I’m not a mathematician or a Programmer but list comprehensions are pretty cool.

Meetings [Link]

A seriously funny look at meetings by Jeff Atoord.

I don’t like the “optional” meeting idea. Unless he adds a corrolary. Anyone that misses a meeting but still needs the information discussed in the meeting (and thus needs someone else to reiterate the meeting) will pay a penalty. I suggest a penalty of 2 hours in another meeting that teaches how to have more effective meetings.

The Window Into Gmail [Link]

An interesting article from Waxy.org about linking accounts to Gmail. I’m pretty sure this is the way Google wants us to use their services. It benefits their business if they become the hub for all data. I’m not sure it’s as dire as this article puts it, but I’m happy to be out of Google services.

Clean-up Permissions [Link]

Thanks to @viticci on Twitter for re-tweeting the mypermissions.org site. The service is really just a bunch of links to the permissions pages of the common web services. It’s still a good reminder to go back and revoke permissions if they are not needed.

Here’s what my Dropbox permissions looked like, and I curate the list regularly: 1

Little Snitch Vs. Hands Off [Link]

A very good review of both applications by AppStorm. I use Little Snitch which means I know how crappy the web is and how much information they want from me just for hitting a page. I recommend anyone to get either one of these applications.

Contact Notes in NVAlt [Link]

Brett has a relatively straight forward script to insert a link from an the Address Book entry to an NVAlt note. This is going to be extremely useful on the Mac and gives me all kinds of ideas.

For what it’s worth, I usually keep notes about people in 1Password. I would feel horrible if some how my personal notes got out. Their not bad notes, but some of the notes contain social security numbers for my family as well as their WiFi passwords for when I visit (or they forget it and call me).
